Custodian Appreciation Activity for National Custodian Day

National Custodian Day is celebrated on October 2, and it is such a good reminder to stop and thank the people who do so much behind the scenes at our schools.

Our custodians do so much more than keep the building clean. They keep everything in tip-top shape, help when something needs fixed, clean up the messes that happen throughout the day, and are always there when we need them.

I think it is important for students to notice that too.

A Simple Custodian Appreciation Day Activity

For our custodian appreciation day activity, my students wrote thank-you notes and drew pictures for our school custodians.

Before we started, we talked about all of the things our custodians do that students may not always think about. We talked about cleaning classrooms and hallways, taking out the trash, helping with spills, keeping things running, and making sure our school is ready for us each day.

Once we started talking about it, the students had plenty to write about.

I love reading what second graders notice. Their answers are always simple, sweet, and very honest.

This activity gave us a chance to work in a little writing, but more importantly, it gave students a chance to say thank you to someone who helps take care of our school every day.

More Ways to Celebrate Your School Custodian

You can keep it really simple. Students could write a thank-you note, make a card, draw a picture, or write about why custodians are important to their school.

You could collect the pages into a class book, hang them in the hallway, or deliver them to your custodian as a class.
