Book Review Templates for Students: An Easy Reading Response Activity
Updated: Sep 13
Book review templates are a simple way to help students think about what they read and organize their thoughts. Instead of asking students to just write a book review on their own, I like giving them a little structure. The prompts help them think about the book, share their opinion, and explain what they liked or did not like.
Why Use Book Review Templates?
Book review templates give students a place to organize their ideas before they write.
Depending on the template, students can think about things like:
What the book was about
Their favorite part
Important characters or events
What they learned
Whether they would recommend the book
Their overall rating

An Easy Reading Response Activity
I like using book review templates because they can work with almost any book. Students can use them after independent reading, during reading centers, with small group reading, or after finishing a class read aloud. They are also a good way to work in a little writing without making it feel like a big assignment.
Using a 5-Star Rating

The 5-star rating is one of my favorite parts because students understand it right away.
They can rate the book based on how much they enjoyed it and then explain why they gave it that rating. It is a simple way to get students thinking about their opinion and giving a reason to support it.
Other Ways to Use Book Reviews
Completed book reviews can also be used for more than just an assignment. You could use them to make a classroom book recommendation display, add them to a reading notebook, or let students share them with classmates when they are looking for something new to read.
Book Review Templates for Your Classroom
If you are looking for an easy way to add more reading response and writing into your day, book review templates are a simple option that can be used again and again.
